In this part of the world, every time we see a container, we wish it off the road because of the danger it constantly poses to other road users. We have witnessed too many accidents that are container related. A shipping container is used for shipment and it can withstand storage & handling. There are different types of containers used in shipping cargo; the choice of the container is usually based on the type and size of the cargo. There are about 16 types of containers but for export of agricultural commodities, I will limit our discussion to 3 commonly used containers. 1. The Standard shipping containers are 8ft wide & 8.5ft high. Standard shipping containers are most commonly used for cargo movement locally and internationally. It is used to store most dry goods, boxes, pallets and sacks. 2. High cube containers are almost similar to other cargo containers except height. Compared to other standard containers, high cube containers are taller at 9.5ft high. All types of dry cargo are stuffed in high cube containers. 3. Reefer containers are used to transport goods where temperature conditions to be controlled. Temperature sensitive cargo such as vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy products etc. are transported in reefer containers . Most times- the contract gives the option of either high cube or standard containers. Ensure you adhere strictly to the contract terms and if you are going to have to deviate from the contract terms, discuss and agree with the buyer before making that decision. I hope the next time you see a container on the road, you will view it as a box stuffed with goods for exports. I wish you a successful export transaction
